Janai Purnima

Nepal is a multi-religious, multi-lingual, multi-ethical country. So, there are many festivals and occasions. Among them Janai Purnima is also one of the important festival of Nepal celebrated by Hindu religion.

Janai Purnima is the most sacred and important religion of Hindu religion. Janai Purnima celebrates the bond of pureness, love and security. In the term of Janai Purnima Janai means holy thread and Purnima means full moon day. On the day of Janai Purnima the men of Brahmin and Chhetri group change Janai with new one, which is worshipped. The person who does not wear Janai wear sacred thread called “Doro” around the wrist by pandit “priest”.

In the other hand, another festival called Rakshyabandan is also celebrated in the day of Janai Purnima. In this day all the sisters tie a sacred thread called “Rakshya” to all the brothers which increase the bond of relationship between brother and sister and increase love and purity between them. After having rakshya, all the brothers give gifts to sisters. They celebrate this day fanfare by eating variety of delicious food and dancing and singing.

We should not forget our old culture and traditions which are replaced by new one. The old culture should be respected as like the new one. The old culture represents us as Nepali in the world. So, that we should remember that “Old is Gold” and keep respecting the culture and traditions.
